The Steven J. Rosen Mentor Award.

This award is given annually to a college English professor who has been an active member of NJCEA and has mentored colleagues. This individual should have contributed to the profession beyond assigned teaching duties by demonstrating leadership, giving wise counsel, and providing extraordinary guidance.

Recipients of the Award

Since its inception in 1997, recipients of the award have included: 

  • Mary Ellen Byrne, Professor of English at Ocean County College
  • Carole Shaffer-Koros, Dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Kean University Stephen Hahn, Associate Provost at William Paterson University 
  • Santi Buscemi, Chair of the English Department at Middlesex County College 
  • Mary Irby O'Reilly, Professor of English at Rider University 
  • Judith Johnston, Director of Gender Studies at Rider University 
  • Catarina Feldmann, Professor of English, William Paterson University 
  • Carol Hovanec, Professor of Literature, Ramapo College of New Jersey, 
  • Maria Devasconcebs, Professor of English at Borough of Manhattan Community College Dorothea Hoffner, Professor Emerita of Union County College 
  • Chrysanthy Greico, Associate Professor of English at Seton Hall University
  • Morton D. Rich, Professor of English at Montclair State University
  • Constance Rubin, Chair of the English Department at Union County College
  • Professor Angela Weisl, Chair of the English Department at Seton Hall University
  • Professor and Director of Faculty Development at Seton Hall University, Mary Balkun

Guidelines For Nominating Candidates

  • Only written nominations will be considered.
  • The nominating statement(s) should give examples of how the candidate has served as a mentor to colleagues. 
  • Any colleague, student, administrator, or friend may nominate the candidate; nominators need not be members of NJCEA.
  • Nominations must have a second; additional nominators are encouraged.
  • Self nominations will not be accepted.
  • The nominee must be in the field of English (literature, composition/rhetoric/ creative writing) and must be a member in good standing of the NJCEA
  • Final decisions on the award will be made by vote of the officers and trustees of NJCEA. The committee also reserves the right not to give the award if nominees are determined not to meet the criteria.
