2024 NJCEA Fall Roundtable

Saturday, October. 5, 10am – 12pm, in Zoom

"The Rise of AI Use In Education” 10:00 – 11:00

Discussion Leader:  Rachael Warmington

Students are increasingly using AI text generators to

complete their assignments. It is crucial to design

assignments that cannot easily be completed by AI to

maintain academic integrity and rigor as well as to

assess student understanding and

skills. Some questions we will consider:

  • What are the capabilities of AI writing tools?
  • What are the limitations of AI writing tools?
  • Should we teach the ethical use of AI?

“Continuing to have Difficult Conversations in Equally Difficult Circumstances” 11:00 – 12:00

Discussion Leader:  Maria Plochocki

Student protests have been roiling many campuses since the 7 Oct. 2023 breakout of the war between Israel and Hamas; the stakes of the 2024 election will be among the highest ever, adding to the tensions. Some questions we will consider:

  • How can we facilitate civil, productive discussions in our classes?
  • How do we speak our own moral and political truths even as we face threats such as termination and arrest?
  • How do we navigate increasingly militarized campuses?
  • How are these realities changing our roles and job descriptions?
