Please join us for an informal discussion and brunch meeting for New Jersey College English Association  to address common issues and concerns that we face as English teachers and scholars.

Directions can be obtained at http://www.kean.edu/directions.html

Please e-mail the registration information below if you plan to attend.

Discussion Topics:

"Politics and the Classroom"
In a heated campaign season such as this fall's presidential
election, this topic presents itself as likely to engender lively debate.
  • What is the nexus between literature and politics?
  • How do we talk about politics in an academic setting?
  • How does the teaching of literature allow us to explore issues of contemporary politics?
  • How do we raise the political consciousness of our students without engaging in personal polemics and diatribes?
  • What about questions of class, race and gender politics?

"Information Literacy and the Research Paper"
In this era of increased computer literacy, most of our students are learning to write with the full resources of the Internet at their command.
  • How do we teach them to research their sources and recognize the different kinds of literacy and scholarship various web sites, data bases, etc., offer?
  • What, if any, are the new parameters of the Composition Research Paper?
  • How do contemporary communication technologies enable us to better instruct our students how to write, and how do our students respond to these new tools?
  • Has the writing of the research paper become more, or less challenging in the era of information literacy?
